Arron Hopkinson put in a dominant display and scored a goal to help Merstham secure the Surrey Senior Cup in a 4-1 win over Goldaming Town at Woking’s Kingfield Stadium.
The winger has been in fine form since joining the Ryman Premier Division club in November and believes securing the win in a cup final was a perfect way to finish the season.
“It’s great to end up winning a trophy after a long and tough season. You don’t get many chances in football to win trophies so it was great to get to the final and and win it.
“It was the cherry on top of our targets this season. We have four objectives and we had achieved three of them before the final so to achieve the fourth and final objective was a great achievement for everyone at the club.”
The 24-year-old scored Merstham’s fourth goal of the game, which effectively ended any hope of the opposition staging a comeback.
“Scoring any goal is a great feeling but in a cup final it’s special. It was a big occasion in front of a good crowd so I was delighted I could help the team win the game.
“I thought I had a solid performance, I delivered some good balls into the box, which is what I try and base my game on. However, I’m always critical of my performances and I am always looking at where I can improve.”
After finishing 10th in the league, the former Lewes and Bognor Regis Town attacker expects Merstham to build on their impressive debut campaign at Step 3.
“It’s a great achievement for Merstham. It’s not a massive club and we’ve been described as the AFC Bournemouth of the league but I feel this season has set the foundations and platform for the club to now carry on and progress not only on the pitch but off it too.
“Obviously the season was a success as it was the club’s highest ever finish but I know with a manager like Hayden the club won’t look to stand still now. There will be work going on throughout the summer and pre-season to turn a top ten finish into a top five finish.”
